Summer Greetings from SCCD!

With SCCD Hotel School now located in The Thamada Hotel in downtown Yangon, our desire to house the school within a hotel environment to improve the learning experience and ease the transition for our students from classroom to the workplace has been fulfilled. This is one step closer to our vision of having a student-run hotel with the hotel providing workplace training and experience in a real environment.

Expanding our training footprint in Myanmar, SCCD Hotel School will launch hotel and restaurant operations training courses in Mandalay in partnership with Chindwin College ( www.chindwin.com ) beginning with the “Café and Restaurant Operations” programme in 3 rd quarter 2008. Trainees will be provided with hands-on training in Point-of-Sale system. Integral to all SCCD curricula, students will receive in-house practice at the soon-to-open Chindwin Cafes in Mandalay under supervision before taking the next step towards either an on-the-job training stint with hotels and resorts in Myanmar or abroad.

In 2008, SCCD Hotel School will continue to pursue outreach efforts through ongoing collaboration with the Swiss-run NGO - Center for Vocational Training (CVT) 3-year apprenticeship programme - Hotel & Gastronomy Assistant - to develop junior professionals for the hotel industry in Myanmar.

Moving forward in 2008, SCCD is ready to step up hotel training & education to the intermediate level with the introduction of the CTH (Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality, UK) Diploma in Hotel Management ( www.cthawards.com ) in September. The programme, aimed at educating the supervisory and mid-management tiers of the hotel industry, will be taught by a mix of Myanmar and foreign faculty.

Until the next Enewsflash, I remain,

Yours in Virtual Reality,

U YEE HTUN takes over the role of Centre Manager at the SCCD Hotel School, with effect from 1 July 2008, from U Ye Win Aung who has returned to the hotel industry.

An F & B Service Instructor with the SCCD Hotel School since 2001 and later F & B Service Course Manager, U Yee Htun is one of the pioneers and is also one of the few managers in Myanmar boasting a good mix of practical hotel experience and hospitality training background. A graduate of the City & Guilds Diploma in Food & Beverage Service, U Yee Htun is also an F & B and catering veteran in government functions and state dinners. Well experienced in catering to banquets of the highest order in Myanmar, U Yee Htun is regularly called upon to manage food & beverage service during state functions in Nay Pyi Taw on behalf of THE thingaha.

SCCD Alumnus, Ma Charm Thiri Soe from the 1 st batch has recently been appointed hospitality tutor at the FTMS School in Singapore for the CTH Diploma in Hotel Management. Charm, well done!

SCCD F & B Course Manager and Centre Manager, U Yee Htun led a selected team of F & B Service students (from both the City & Guilds Skills Proficiency Award and Diploma courses) to support THE thingaha ( www.thingaha.com ) hosting state functions in early July for the Government of Myanmar at the Bayintaung Hall in Nay Pyi Taw. The students received invaluable experience and exposure in the art of serving VIPs during the outside catering events. Saya U Yee Htun also trained banquet staff of The Thingaha on the finer points of silver service at banquet functions.
